PrEP and Ireland: Availability, Effectiveness, and Concerns

DID YOU KNOW? PrEP is an antiretroviral medication that is safe and well-tolerated; the most common side effect being gastrointestinal that resolves after a few weeks. PrEP can be used by HIV-negative individuals, reducing the risk of HIV infection by 44-92%! It is mainly taken by men who have sex with men (MSM), those with HIV-positive partner, those who engage in risky sexual behaviour, and are intravenous drug users. However, in Ireland, awareness about PrEP is low and there is an issue with non-adherence to the medication.
